Picnics with Purpose: Nourish, Move, Connect

There’s still plenty of summer left—it’s with us through September 22, which means more time to enjoy the sunshine and soak up the warm weather! If you’re looking for a way to embrace the last few weeks of the season, or if you’re seeking an activity that brings your TOPS chapter together and keeps your health goals at the forefront, now’s the time to plan a picnic!

There are so many ways to make your picnic one-of-a-kind. Here are a few ideas to keep health at the heart of it.

Pack Healthy

August and September are a great time to enjoy seasonal produce at local farmers markets! Some of the best seasonal produce items are at their prime right now, such as corn, heirloom tomatoes, peaches and apples.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated in the heat—fill your reusable water bottle or pack chilled drinks like flavored or sparkling water in a cooler to enjoy at your picnic.

As you’re planning your picnic basket, ask yourself: “Is this helping me reach my health goals?” Lean into those in-season fruits and veggies, and consider what small swaps you can make to feel your best. A few thoughtful choices can go a long way!

Incorporate Movement

Whether you’re meeting at a local park, beach or lakefront, community garden or a friend’s backyard, there are many ways you can incorporate movement into your outing. Take a little time before or after (or both!) the meal to walk around the area, whether it’s along a park pathway, through a neighborhood or along the beach.

If that’s not your cup of tea, try stretching at your picnic set-up. Your body will thank you later—especially if you’re lounging on a picnic blanket! You can also pack backyard games that keep you active and entertained, such as bags, frisbee or even a kite.

Involve Your Chapter, Friends or Family

With the warm breeze and long days, is your TOPS chapter getting a little antsy during meetings? This is the perfect opportunity to take it outdoors! (Remember to use the TOPS activity waiver if you’re incorporating movement.)

Or, gather friends or family for a late-season picnic of your own! After all, your mental and social well-being are just as important as your physical health.

Have Fun

Remember, your picnic is all about supporting your health—and having fun while you're at it! Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Consider adding a playful theme, like a tea party or international flavors. If you’re looking for ways to stay cool and feel your best in the heat, don’t miss these helpful summer health hacks.

Remember, no matter how you choose to gather, the memories you create will nourish more than just your body!
