Tips for Raising Funds for the TOPS Fights Obesity Campaign

Raising funds for a cause you care about is such a powerful and fulfilling experience. October is TOPS Fights Obesity Month, and we’re encouraging members to help us support obesity research, education and prevention by choosing a physical activity, setting a personal goal and gathering sponsor support for your movement challenge. But, we get it, asking for donations can feel a little awkward. That’s why we at TOPS Headquarters put together this list of tips to help make the process easier.

Lead With Your “Why”

People are more likely to sponsor you when they have a better understanding of why a certain cause is so important to you. Instead of saying “I’m raising money for obesity research,” try something like, “I’m walking 10,000 steps a day in October because TOPS has helped me reclaim my health, and I want to support research that could help others do the same.” By sharing your unique “why” and personal story, you’re inviting others to support something bigger and more meaningful.

Start Close to Home

Begin with the people closest to you who are supportive of your health journey. Starting with your inner circle helps you build confidence and momentum before you reach out to your broader network (if you choose to do so, of course).

Take a Low-Pressure Approach

If you’re not comfortable reaching out to people one-on-one, sharing a Facebook or Instagram post lets your network know about your involvement with the TOPS Fights Obesity Challenge without putting anyone on the spot. We’ve even come up with these caption ideas that you’re welcome to customize and make your own. Remember to include the #TOPSFightsObesity hashtag!

Ask for Small and Specific Amounts

Instead of asking "Would you be willing to sponsor me?" try "Would you be willing to sponsor me for $5?" This removes the awkwardness of the respondent having to guess what’s appropriate, and a smaller amount may feel more manageable.

Consider Gathering Donations as a Chapter

If you're not comfortable asking for sponsorships as an individual, check with your chapter to see if members are willing to host a walk or other fitness-themed event to help raise funds as a group. Last year, one chapter held their own dance-a-thon to help raise funds. We are always impressed by how creative TOPS chapters can be! If your chapter reaches a fundraising milestone—which you can read more about on the TOPS Fights Obesity page—you can turn the thank-you gifts into prizes for a chapter drawing. For example, if your chapter raises $100, you'd receive a T-shirt and TOPS Classic Coffee Mug that could be raffled off to participating members. If your chapter chooses to do a group fitness activity, just remember to have all participants sign an exercise waiver

Every step you take and every dollar you raise helps fund vital obesity research and education that can change lives. Remember to send a thank-you card or handwritten note to each sponsor. A little thoughtful touch goes a long way in showing your gratitude.

Whether you're walking, dancing or moving in your own way, you're helping TOPS make a difference. Now, let's get moving, TOPS Nation!
