When eating out at a restaurant, you don’t have to think of it as a “cheat day”—it’s completely normal to be more flexible with your eating habits from time to time. However, if you want to enjoy your food while still staying on track with your goals, a variety of small choices can equal a healthier meal.
Here are 10 tips for dining out—without compromising your health journey!
- Choose a venue that aligns with your goals: Before heading out, check out nearby restaurants online and find a menu that balances your goals and tastes. No matter your eating plan, look for places that offer options you’ll enjoy while still meeting your needs.
- Try something new: If you’ve struggled with sticking to your goals at restaurants in the past, consider stepping outside of your comfort zone. Exploring different cuisines can offer great health benefits—like protein-packed, vegetable-rich or whole grain dishes. You might even discover your new favorite meal!
-
Limit your order: With so many tempting options—drinks, appetizers, entrées, sides and desserts—it’s easy to want a little of everything. But remember, you can always come back and try some of these options next time! Instead, try one or two items you’ll truly enjoy.
- Prioritize protein and fiber: These two nutrients keep you feeling full for longer, making it easier to avoid overeating.
- Customize your order: Don’t be afraid to make modifications to your meal. For example, you can ask for dressing on the side, grilled instead of fried protein or extra vegetables instead of fries.
- Drink lots of water: Drinking the recommended amount of daily water can be challenging, but you can make it easier by choosing water over sugary drinks when you’re dining out, too.
- Slow down and savor: Eating mindfully allows you to enjoy your meal more and recognize when you're full, reducing overeating.
- Ask for a takeout box: Restaurant portions are often larger than what’s considered a healthy serving. Don’t hesitate to ask for a to-go box and save the leftovers. Not only do you have a second meal for the cost of one, but it’s something delicious to look forward to tomorrow!
- Add a walk to your outing: Enjoy some fresh air! Consider taking a stroll on your own or with a friend before or after your meal to help with digestion.
- Celebrate your choices: No matter what you decide to order, recognize your mindful decisions and celebrate your progress. Perfection isn’t the goal—every positive choice, big or small, is a step forward. Keep going, and don’t give up!
