Let's be honest, it can be easy to focus on the negative things in life. Especially with a 24-hour news cycle and social media at our fingertips. Yet in the middle of the hustle and bustle, we often miss out on the small, heartwarming moments that bring us peace. These are the "glimmers" that quietly remind us of the goodness that surrounds us … if we take a moment to notice.
What Are Glimmers?
The term "glimmers," coined by Deb Dana, a licensed clinical social worker, clinician and author specializing in complex trauma, refers to small moments when our brains and bodies feel connected and calm. Think of them as the opposite of triggers, which can create a rush of stress or worry. Glimmers are gentle signals telling our nervous system that everything is OK.
These moments can include:
- Snuggling with a pet
- A hug from an old friend
- Noticing the first signs of greenery and plants in spring
- Watching the way birds enjoy your feeder
- A kind smile from a stranger at a coffee shop
Finding Your Glimmers
Try this simple practice: Over the next week, notice your glimmers – those small moments of joy that brighten your day. You might want to write them down in a journal, capture them with a photo or save them as a note on your phone.
As you collect these moments, you may naturally become more attuned to the simple joys surrounding you daily. Consider making this a regular practice. Each week, take a few minutes to reflect on the glimmers you've noticed. You might be surprised by how many beautiful, calm moments you discover when you're actively looking for them.
