5 Healthy Outdoor Adventures for Your Best Season

5 Healthy Outdoor Adventures for Your Best Season

The summer months always seem to fly by, and before you know it, it’s back-to-school time. Make every moment count this season by embracing outdoor adventures, trying new activities and creating lasting memories. Our five summer activity suggestions will help you make the most of these precious warm days, whether you're looking to stay active, explore nature, or simply soak up the sun like Sheryl Crow.

Try an outdoor app like Seek by iNaturalist.

Using the power of image recognition technology, this app helps you identify plants, flowers, fungi and other wildlife around you on your smartphone. We like that it makes being outside even more fun, it’s family-friendly and it’s free! You can earn badges for identifying different types of birds and plants and participate in monthly challenges. Or you can just impress your friends with your newfound knowledge of nature.

Hit the pickleball court.

Many TOPS members think pickleball is dill-ightful fun, and we couldn’t agree more. This sport combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, and can be played indoors or outdoors. It's easy to learn but challenging to master, making it perfect for people of all ages and skill levels. Pickleball offers a great workout while being gentler on the joints than some other sports. Look for local parks or community centers that offer pickleball courts, or join a beginner's class to get started.

Try this hotel room-friendly workout.

If you’ll be away from home this summer, maybe in a hotel room, Airbnb or cottage, try these limited space-friendly moves featuring Rachel Werner, TOPS Club's Nutrition and Fitness Editor. All you need is a little space, a wall and a sturdy chair to incorporate these strength and flexibility moves.

Go for a sunrise or sunset walk or hike.

Start or end your day with a memorable outdoor experience by walking during the golden hours. Are you a morning person? Pack a thermos of hot or cold-brew coffee, bring a friend and head to the nearest park. More of an evening person? Be sure to wear reflective clothing and take a sunset stroll with a pal or your four-legged friend. Golden hour walks offer a peaceful way to connect with nature, get some gentle exercise and appreciate the beauty of your surroundings as the day begins or ends.

Start a container garden for herbs.

Gardening is a fulfilling and low-impact activity that can be enjoyed even if you don’t have a ton of space. Start small with a few pots on a patio, balcony or windowsill and choose easy-to-grow herbs like basil, mint or chives. There’s something so satisfying about growing and nurturing plants, and it's even better when you can add fresh flavors to your meals. No need for a large yard–just a sunny spot and a bit of care will do!

Summer offers endless possibilities for outdoor adventures and healthy activities. Pack up your TOPS backpack and see where the day can bring you! Challenge yourself to try at least one new activity from our list and let us know how it goes.
